To me it is kind of like saying what is your favorite song of all time or your favorite movie of all time. It really depends on what mood I am in as to what jewlery accessories I choose on any given day.

If I am sad as a worm, an uplifting song or movie is just what I probably need, but it sure isn’t necessarily what I want. In fact, it tends to kind of ticks me off to have to listen to something real jolly and uplifting when I am more than down about something. But let’s get back to jewlery.

I guess, one of the basics we should address when we’re talking about Jewlery is to point out all the many different spellings for the word jewlery. There is jewellery, jewelry, jewelery, jewlry, jewlrey and of course jewlery. Kind of confusing isn’t it? I will use all of them interchangeably throughout our discussion.

What is my favorite type of Jewlery?

For some reason, I wear a lot of silver jewlery these days. I have a sterling silver charm bracelet and two sterling silver rings. I also wear some sterling earrings that are inlaid with turquoise and spiny oyster. I absolutely love them.

I don’t care too much for the earrings that dangle, although everyone says they look terrific on me. Most likely, it is because I’ve never gotten used to wearing them. I have dark hair and the sterling silver earrings that dangle down really accent my curly dark hair. I should probably try to get used to wearing them. Hey, a girl needs all the attention she can get, right?

I have been looking at some sterling silver jewellery watches. They can kind of be pricey, so I have been on the lookout for some at the wholesale sterling silver jewellery online stores.

I know exactly what I want, I just haven’t found the right price for it. But, I’m a patient woman, and I’ll just keep looking until I find what I want at the right price.

The silver watch that I’m on the lookout for is a southwestern style with truquoise and spiny oyster inlay to go with the beautiful sterling silver earring jewlery that I already have.

When I go out to an Art show or museum opening or a special birthday celebration, I like to wear gold jewellery including gold jewelery necklaces, rings, and, of course, my gold Rolex watch. Events like these are opportunities to see and be seen aren’t they?

Just the act of wearing gold jewlery makes me feel elegant, successful and upbeat. I guess gold jewlery has been a symbol of wealth and power for as long as any of us can remember hasn’t it?

Like me, you’ve probably wondered why of all the precious metals that gold and gold jewellery have remained all down through recorded time as the most desirable and popular symbols of wealth, power and prosperity.

Why out of all the metals was the allure of gold so strong that countless wars have been fought in every time period, by most cultures, and by many, many nations?

Just why has gold been so sought after that it has historically always been the singular symbol of power and wealth and why has it literally been worshiped by so many peoples and nations?

Even today,n most cultures, gold and gold jewellery still proves to be the most coveted precious metal for any culture and country. For example, look at our modern day stock market.

When the economy seems to be heading south, people of every country start buying gold stocks, and gold. They beging hording gold, gold jewellery, gold items of every description, and they even start saving their gold teeth.

Gold buyers advertise on TV that they will purchase your unwanted, outdated gold jewellery pieces. The practice is so lucrative and popular that it can even be done quickly by mail. The latest ad that I saw said you would get your money within seven days. That’s a pretty fast turnover since they have to get your gold pieces, weigh and analyze them, and then get your money back to you.

What about the contagious fever that resulted in the famous California Gold Rush in 1848. Men rushed to the west in hopes of hitting the big gold find that would make them unbelievably rich.

Most didn’t find gold, and a lot of them died trying. Yet, there were more than a few gold rushers that actually did strike it rich on their finds of big, wonderful, gold nuggets.

The brilliance of gold in the 14th century captivated the Incas and inspired them to totally cover every wall of the stunning Temple of the Sun in the golden precious metal. In the 15h century, Cortes defeated Montezuma and seized the Aztec’s vast stores of gold.

The Egyptians were smitten with gold and buried their Pharaohs and Queens with all manner of gold jewellery, gold head pieces, golden wrist bands, and their subjects even covered their caskets with gold.

The wealthy Egyptians wore gold jewellery and other fine jewlery of every description even during daily life. How many movies have been made about the enormous majestic Pyramids with their famous gold-laden burial tombs?

Yes, there is no doubt that the brilliance of gold and gold jewlery has magnetically drawn we human beings from the beginning of recorded history. We’ve hunted it, coveted it, horded it, and we’ve even killed many times over for it.

The allure of diamond jewelery today is almost as strong as the the love for gold jewellery has been all down through time.

While diamond jewlery has been sought after and worn throughout a great deal of recorded history, the art and science of cutting loose diamonds is relatively new, and it has only been during the last 150 yrs. or so that jewlery made with modern cut diamonds has been available to the general public.

That was a definite surprise to me as I thought that jewlers had been using the kinds and cuts of diamonds we see in our jewelery today for much longer than that.

Today, almost all jewlery stores offer a large selection of diamond jewlery, but prior to 150 years ago it was almost exclusively worn by royalty in their crowns and rings.

What about costume jewlery?

Where and when did it originate? From what we can gather, costume jewlery, as we know it today, appeared in the 1930′s.

It came into being as an inexpensive and disposable jewlery accessory made and meant to be worn with a certain outfit. It was never intended to be handed down from generation to generation.

When fashions changed, so did the look of costume jewlery. It was created to be fashionable for a brief period, shortly out date itself, and then something new would be created for the next fashion, fad or style.

Cheap jewelry also existed prior to the 1930s. Paste or glass jewelry dated as far back as the 1700s. The wealthy had their fine diamond and gold jewlery duplicated for a variety of reasons, usually to keep if from being stolen. Glass or paste stones were used on gold plated or rolled gold mounts as substitutes for real gems and 14 or 18 carat gold.

In today’s world, jewlery still symbolizes so many different things, from marriage to the Pope’ ring to simple friendship, and it is even used to help bring attention to causes such as breast cancer research and awareness.
